I finally delivered the sensory mural to St Joseph School for the Blind and the Visually Impaired. I completed my special needs placement with the amazing teachers, SNA's and students at the school back in September and had been grabbing any free minutes (there weren't many! ) since then to create this piece for their new sensory room. The piece has an under the sea theme and has 5 different sound buttons and 5 different textures for the children to experience. It also has several sections painted in florescent paint that glow under UV light, -children with cortical visual impairment are attracted to bright glowing lights, so this part of the mural is for them. I hope the children enjoy it!
I also delivered a plaque of tactile ceramic tiles made by my transition years students at Mac Dara's Community College for the children at St Joseph's. We completed a project where the TY students completed various sensory tasks while blindfolded to experience blindness and the heightening of their other senses. Students then worked on making various textures using ceramics, inspired by artist and scientist Ernst Haeckel's sea creature illustrations.
